    Dear Parents,
Open House wasHappy October! Students did a great success! I enjoyed meeting all of you and sharing my classroom with you. The students were very excited to receive your notes.
    We were quite busy
job this week in language arts. Our essential question was, “How do your actions affect others?”reading expository text. We focusedread articles about earthquakes and tornadoes. We worked on the strategies causemultiple meaning words, compare and effectcontrast and problem and solution. Students also practiced identifying the literary elementstext features of realistic fiction and using supporting evidence. Subject and predicate were the focus in grammar. It would seem more practice will be necessary!expository text. In writing, grammar, we began brainstorming ideas for our first narrative. Students needed to think about events from their summer vacation. We then narrowed our list to our three favorites. The final decision was made by determining how muchpracticed compound sentences. In writing, they liked their idea, how manystarted organizing details they could remember, and would readers be interested. I personallyevents for their personal narratives. They will be modeling my night at Fenway Park in seats behind the dugout.
    In
writing a friendly letter about a summer event.
    In
math, we worked on rounding, estimation, addition ofsubtraction with multi-digit numbers and problem solving. The challengenumbers. We continue to work on multi-step word problems using all these skills istape diagrams and assessing the reasonableness of answers. Inanswers using estimation. Highlighting important information and key words has been modeled and practiced. Students will be taking the end of module assessment on Friday, October 13th.
    In
science, we read an articlewatched and discussed several short videos on the kinds of energy and how they can transform.transfer in collision. In social studies, we continuedpracticed reading transportation maps.
    Permission slips for our trip
to workSlater Mill on landforms. We createdNovember 21st were distributed. If you have not done so already, please return the permission slip and money by Friday, October 13th. Chaperones will be notified at that time. Remember you must have an updated BCI check to chaperone.
The class has been working very hard on self-control and transition time. Wednesday was
a landform mapparticularly difficult day but they definitely redeemed themselves by the end of the United States.
    Have a great
week. They are very excited to be filling the marble jar.
    Enjoy the long
    weekend!
    Sincerely,
    Karen Friedmann
